Google Play Feature Graphic: Size, Rules and Design Tips

The 1024 × 500 banner every Play listing needs: specs, where it shows, policy rules and design tips.

Updated:

The feature graphic is the wide banner at the top of a Google Play listing. You can't publish without one, yet it is often made in five minutes at the end. Done well, it gives your listing a strong first impression and is the cover image people see before they play your promo video.

Where it appears

  • At the top of your listing when you add a promo video; the graphic becomes the video's cover with a play button over it.
  • In featured placements and editorial collections when Google promotes your app.
  • In some ads and promotional surfaces that Google generates from your listing.

Because it is shown at different sizes and sometimes with elements on top, it has to work small and survive cropping.

What Google's policy doesn't allow

Google Play's metadata policy applies to graphics as well as text. Avoid these, or your listing may be rejected:

  • Rankings and performance claims such as "#1", "Best app" or "Top rated".
  • Prices and promotions such as "Free", "50% off" or "Limited time".
  • Calls to action that imitate Play UI, such as a fake "Install" button.
  • Misleading images that don't represent the app, or other companies' logos without permission.

Design tips

Keep the important part in the middle

Edges can be cropped and the centre may be covered by a play button when you have a video. Keep your logo and headline away from the very edges, and if you use a promo video, don't place critical text right in the centre.

Few words, big type

One short line, at most five or six words, is plenty. The feature graphic is often seen at a fraction of its size, so small text disappears. Your app name or one clear benefit is enough.

Show the product

A device with your best screen, or a bold crop of your interface, tells people what the app is at a glance. Purely abstract art is pretty but explains nothing.

Match your screenshots

Use the same colours, font and style as your screenshots so the listing looks like one product. A visitor who sees the banner and then scrolls the screenshots should feel continuity, not two different designers.

Localize it

If your graphic contains text, upload a translated version for each language you support. A Spanish listing with an English banner looks unfinished. Read more in the localization guide.

Design the graphic last, from your finished screenshots: reuse the strongest screen and the headline that tested best.

Common mistakes

  1. Uploading a screenshot instead. A cropped phone screenshot stretched to 1024 × 500 looks blurry and empty at the sides.
  2. Too much text. A tagline, three features and a rating badge won't be readable anywhere the graphic is actually shown.
  3. Logo only. Your icon already appears next to the listing; repeating it on a blank background wastes the space.
  4. Transparent PNG. Google rejects graphics with an alpha channel. Export it flattened, as JPEG or 24-bit PNG.
  5. Forgetting the video cover. If you add a promo video later, check that the play button doesn't land on your headline.

Generate it with your screenshots

Every StoreAppScreens template comes with a matching feature graphic. When you export, you get a 1024 × 500 graphic per language next to your screenshots, in the same colours and font, without opening a design tool.
